2nd Annual EWB/SGHC Run for Water (Friends of Live Earth)
In many countries in the developing world, it is not uncommon for women and children to walk an average of six kilometers every day just to fetch enough water for their families’ daily needs (UNFOA, 2002). The Daniel A. Okun Chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) at UNC-CH is dedicated to responding to the lack of adequate water supplies in rural and underserved communities worldwide by partnering with these communities to implement sustainable water, sanitation, energy, and waste management projects. The annual 6k road race hosted by EWB and UNC’s Student Global Health Committee (SGHC) is intended to raise local awareness of the worldwide water crisis by encouraging runners to “think global, run local!” All race entry fees and proceeds will go towards assisting EWB’s student-led projects. In partnership with Live Earth and the national Dow Live Earth Run for Water, the 2nd Annual EWB/SGHC Run for Water will take place on Sunday, April 18, 2010 on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill.
